I was recently asked by Forbes (which I contribute to regularly) to share a tip for utilizing your time off during summer vacation. Here’s the original article and here’s some thoughts I’ve expanded on below.

Here’s the tip I gave:

Indulge in different ways of thinking.

Find ways to expand your worldview and ways of thinking. Explore new books, watch inspiring videos, learn new skills and study how other people live and work. Creativity can be fueled by increases in empathy and understanding of others. By getting out of your own way of thinking, you can find a range of new possibilities and be exposed to insights you never thought possible.

I got back from time off last week. The time was spent roadtripping (11 states), spending time with family, trying new places to eat, asking lots of questions of friends and family about their lives, and reading and listening to great new books.

One of the most refreshing ways for me to grow and learn while still relaxing is by engaging in new ideas. I spent time learning about the history of education in America, the structure of Exponential Organizations, overcoming the mental trauma of poverty, and the state of hospital systems. Each topic may seem disconnected, but by looking for themes and patterns the time sent learning created a flurry of new ideas.

What are some ways you indulge in different ways of thinking?
