Recently, I’ve spent a lot of time talking about Exponential Organizations. With audiences at 1 Million Cups, Singularity University, and now the University of Arkansas management students. Exponential Organizations are an essential topic for anyone who wants to disrupt and innovate.

I’ve shared before the basics of exponential organizations (ExO). They are built and grown differently. They focus on scaling ideas, data, and customer networks at a pace that linear, asset and service-based businesses can’t.

As a class we reviewed the ExO Canvas. A way to simplify thinking around what every ExO needs to succeed. It starts with being built around an important formula.

First, data and information is your primary product. Unique value and competitive advantages come from unique data sets. What do you know that no one else does because of your access to exclusive data?

Second, you must leverage resources you don’t own. It changes the way you think about employees, products/services, and many other parts of your business.

Everything else is just an appendage to those two concepts. Nail those two ideas and you will figure out the rest.
